Roughly fifty automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Law enforcement report they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Law enforcement then found multiple other vandalized cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police say early analysis show the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are presently not informed of any injuries in association with the event," they added.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the residents for tips.
A senior political figure commented the attack left him speechless and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a assailant focusing on people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
