"This championship is in tribute of my child my daughter, because the maiden victory I achieved when my first daughter Alisa was born was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had been defeated in his past six title deciders, comprising in Halle previously this season.

The player's retrieving play style and recurring reactions on the tennis court had led commentators to wonder if his capacity to perform at the top level was finished.

Yet the athlete has made changes in the past month, striving to come to the net and compete positively, reinforced by an better service.

Medvedev recovered from a break down in the initial set against the tricky Frenchman, taking four of the last five exchanges to gain the advantage.

Both players exchanged break points in the following set before the challenger, attempting for his initial ATP Tour victory, took control to create a third set.

He saved four early opportunities in a tight deciding set before the Russian secured a break to 15 to close out the victory.

Fittingly, the winner secured the title with a point at the front of the court, with his opponent failing to manage a volley after over two and a half hours.
