New research suggests that individuals who come off popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these medications should be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the jabs accounts for the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of cravings.
"It was like a switch activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
