An defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently examining the possible threats associated with Chinese cars, while staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified information in any vehicles.
Safety Advice for MoD Personnel
In a recent appearance on LBC, a defence minister commented on reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about secret material while riding in Chinese vehicles.
He stated that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that safety is a concern in every modern vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, to avoid having conversations at a secret level in any car, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Security Background
This announcement comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and cause disruption to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly shining lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.
This wider security situation highlights the significance of robust measures and caution in every areas of official activities, from vehicle use to discussions practices.
