Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Soldiers Table

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, fresh DM the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with rich lore, a diverse cast of characters, and a gripping narrative including angels, demons, and sinister influences growing in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Key plot points for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 are included.

The Combat-Oriented Party Unveiled

Episode 3 ended with a dramatic pause and presented the first table of characters who will split off from the main group to begin their own adventure, apart from the other two tables.

The Soldiers table includes Teor (portrayed by Travis), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney), the cleric (the player), and Kattigan (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Given a large ensemble, it was clear from the beginning that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.

Hence, the initial installments of this story serve as an Prelude, weaving together the individual narratives before branching into three separate parties: Warriors, Strategists, and Questers.

What Defines the Combat Party

As described by the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for participants who are drawn to a classically intense fight-heavy gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are rare.

Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric the cleric might appear out of place, but the developments of episode 3 show why these specific adventurers are best suited for the combat party.

Motivations for Departure

First, the team understands precisely where to go next after a violent first encounter with the antagonists.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose demise started the narrative’s action—used the enemy for his selfish purposes, entering the hidden lair, assaulting Thimble, and stealing all the enchanted items to sell off.

The antagonist then settled his debts and escaped to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, above the city, with Cyd close behind.

Personal Motivations

Secondly, each character has a individual motive to depart the metropolitan area:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and best friend, seeks vengeance.
  • The adventurer knows the northern area and advises that it is a hostile environment.
  • The strong character and The healer, having defied his house’s orders to kill the fighter and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • But, their reputation as key figures in the influential clan could help the team reach areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, Teor swore a eternal obligation to The savior for his salvation and will now follow him anywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Finally, all of them are wanted by the authorities that govern the city for a range of causes, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • The agile adventurer and Kattigan are known criminals.
  • The warrior and The healer turned against the powerful family and the army of fiends they are allied with.
  • The target is marked for death by the family.

This results in them no alternative but to head to the northern region in search of the traitor.

Future Episodes

From the latest episode’s follow-up content, we discover that the warrior group won’t be around the following episode, leaving the other eight players to assemble the Explorers and Schemers groups.

Audiences can look forward to finding out which adventurers will be assigned to which table in the season’s last Overture episode, released on the upcoming Thursday.
