Australia's captain Set to Play a Significant Contribution in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on 21 November in the WACA.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
