A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its duties in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently raised persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these vital initiatives.
